Before you start
Is BPD being overdiagnosed?
Researchers have raised concerns in both directions. BPD is sometimes missed or mistaken for other conditions, such as bipolar disorder, and its symptoms overlap with trauma-related, mood and anxiety disorders. That’s why a careful evaluation by a professional matters more than any online result.
Can I get a formal BPD evaluation for free or at low cost?
Often, yes. Community mental health centers, university training clinics and therapists with sliding-scale fees offer lower-cost assessments, and Medicaid and most insurance plans cover mental health evaluations. SAMHSA’s treatment locator can help you find services near you.
What are the 9 markers of BPD?
“Markers” usually means the nine DSM-5 criteria clinicians use. Our symptoms guide explains each one in plain language with examples, and what it means if several sound familiar.
Who can diagnose BPD?
Licensed mental health professionals, such as psychiatrists, psychologists and, in many states, licensed clinical social workers and counselors. A primary care provider can rule out medical causes and refer you. Read how to get evaluated for BPD.
Is this checklist suitable for people under 18?
No. It’s designed for adults. Teens who are struggling should talk to a parent, school counselor or doctor. Anyone in crisis can call or text 988, any time.
